Adam Rippon is a former ice skater from the United States. At the 2018 Winter Olympics, he was one of the most dramatic figure skaters on the planet, winning the hearts of America and the rest of the world.

Rippon, a silver medalist at the 2012 championships, relocated to Los Angeles the following year to work with renowned coach Rafael Arutunian. With an eighth-place performance at the 2014 championships, he suffered one of the most significant blows of his career, thereby ending any prospects of being considered for the Sochi Games.
He was depressed and contemplated retiring from skating before rediscovering his passion for the sport through choreographing performances for fellow skaters Ashley Wagner and Mirai Nagasu.
He came back to win another silver medal at the 2015 championships before winning his first U.S. gold the following year. He was unable to defend his championship in 2017 due to a fractured foot, but he recovered later in the year to take silver in both of his Grand Prix races.
Rippon finished fourth at the 2018 championships after falling on his first jump of the long program. However, he was recognized for his overall performance during the season and was selected for one of three slots on the United States men's team, with Nathan Chen and Vincent Zhou, providing him his long-awaited Olympic opportunity.
Rippon became the first out gay American athlete to qualify for the Winter Olympics when he was named to the United States Olympic men's figure skating squad in January 2018.

Rippon announced on Instagram that he and his longtime boyfriend, Jussi-Pekka Kajaala, had gotten engaged in December 2020 in Kajaala's home country of Finland.
The Winter Olympian wrote:
JP and I didn’t get to see each other for almost all of 2020 because of the pandemic. When there was finally a chance for me to go and see him in Finland, I jumped at it
Rippon said he spent about two months in Finland with Kajaala, during which time they went to the Finnish forest, shared jokes, and worked on the cottage Kajaala is building.
They had first met through a dating app while Rippon was in Finland for a skating competition in 2017.
We ended up chatting and getting to know each other over the next 6 months. I felt like I had known him forever even without ever meeting in person
