Kathryn Tappen was born on 9 April 1981 in Morristown, New Jersey, the United States to mother Sheila M. Tappen and father Richard G. Tappen. She grew up alongside her sister named Amanda Tappen.

During her University days, Kathryn was a member of the cross-country and track teams along with being a member of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
