He attended the University of Toronto from where he graduated in Business and Philosophy in 1997. He then joined the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

Although Nelson performed in plays in school and college, he never considered it as a career. However, he later moved to New York to pursue an acting career after realizing that acting is what he loved the most.

Nelson is known for appearing in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2001), Law & Order (2003), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2005), Blade: The Series (2006), Claws (2017) and All Saints (2017).

Nelson is at the age of 45 and has a height of 5' 9" (1.75 m).
