Once viewed as Minnesota's quarterback of the future, McCarthy arrived in New York after a difficult start to his professional career, including a lost rookie season and an injury-disrupted 2025 campaign. But the former Michigan national champion has already begun contributing to his new team, giving fans another reason to follow his progress.

The 23-year-old quarterback entered the NFL as the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft and made 10 starts for Minnesota in 2025, throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Since joining the Giants, he has added 495 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception across three appearances in 2026. From his Michigan achievements and NFL statistics to his wife Katya, contract, net worth, and future in New York, here's a closer look at McCarthy's career and life away from football.

J.J. McCarthy Age And Education

J.J. McCarthy was born Jonathan James McCarthy on January 20, 2003, in Evanston, Illinois. He grew up in La Grange Park, Illinois, with his parents, Jim and Megan McCarthy. McCarthy played sports from a young age, including hockey and football, before focusing on his development as a quarterback.

McCarthy began his high school football career at Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park, where he spent 3 years before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, after Nazareth canceled its 2020 football season. He then committed to the University of Michigan, playing for the Wolverines from 2021 through 2023 while studying General Studies in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

McCarthy's time at Michigan was particularly successful. He helped the Wolverines win three consecutive Big Ten championships and led the team to the national title following the 2023 season, establishing himself as one of the top quarterback prospects in his draft class.

J.J. McCarthy Career

J.J. McCarthy has built his football career as a quarterback, first at Michigan and later in the NFL. After starring for the Wolverines, the Minnesota Vikings selected him with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. McCarthy missed his entire 2024 rookie season after tearing his meniscus during the preseason. He returned in 2025 and started all 10 games he played, finishing with 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 181 rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns.

McCarthy’s college career at Michigan became the foundation of his rise to the NFL. Across 40 games and 28 starts, he completed 482 of 713 passes for 6,226 yards, 49 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while finishing with a 27-1 record as a starter. In 2023, he helped Michigan win the national championship, throwing for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns while throwing four interceptions, and rushing for 202 yards and three rushing touchdowns.

His individual honors included the 2023 Griese-Brees Big Ten Quarterback of the Year, consensus first-team All-Big Ten recognition, and the Bo Schembechler Most Valuable Player award. He was also a Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Manning Award finalist, a Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist, and a top-10 Heisman Trophy finisher in 2023. He also earned Rose Bowl Offensive MVP honors after helping Michigan defeat Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal on January 1, 2024.

McCarthy made his regular-season NFL debut with Minnesota in 2025, starting all 10 games. He completed 140 of 243 passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while adding 181 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. After joining the Giants in September 2026, McCarthy appeared in three games through October, including two in which he attempted passes. He completed 31 of 49 passes for 495 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, bringing his career totals to 2,127 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, and 13 interceptions across 13 regular-season appearances.

His 2025 season also included a 72.6 passer rating, 27 sacks, six fumbles, and two lost fumbles.

McCarthy entered the 2026 season competing for a role in Minnesota but eventually fell behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz on the quarterback depth chart. He did not record a regular-season statistic for the Vikings in 2026 before the team traded him to the Giants on September 28.

The trade also reunited McCarthy with a familiar coaching family. At Michigan, he played under Jim Harbaugh and helped the Wolverines win the 2023 national championship. His new head coach in New York is Jim's brother, John Harbaugh, giving McCarthy another opportunity to develop under a coach with close ties to his successful college career.

McCarthy began seeing playing time with the Giants in October. Against the New Orleans Saints on October 18, he threw for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a 34-27 loss. A week later, he completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards without an interception as New York defeated the Houston Texans 27-21. His performances gave the Giants another quarterback option after Jaxson Dart's knee injury.

The Giants acquired McCarthy on September 28 after starting quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the regular season. Head coach John Harbaugh initially confirmed that Jameis Winston would remain the starter. McCarthy later got opportunities in October, adding experience to New York's quarterback rotation as the team navigated Dart's absence.

The Giants return from their Week 8 bye to face the Philadelphia Eagles on November 8, 2026, then host the Washington Commanders on November 12. McCarthy's role in those matchups will depend on New York's quarterback plans, but his October appearances have already given the coaching staff a chance to evaluate him in regular-season action.
