Klay Thompson Biography | Miami Heat Contract, Megan Thee Stallion Split, 4 NBA Rings, Stats & Net Worth

For more than a decade, Klay Thompson was almost inseparable from the Golden State Warriors. Alongside Stephen Curry, he helped turn the “Splash Brothers” into one of basketball’s most famous partnerships, winning four NBA championships and establishing himself as one of the greatest three-point shooters in league history. After two seasons in Dallas, however, Thompson is starting over again, this time with the Miami Heat.

Now 36, Thompson joins a dramatically reshaped Miami team featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo as he chases another championship. His move comes after an eventful year that also included the end of his relationship with Megan Thee Stallion. Here’s a closer look at Thompson’s age, family and education, NBA career, Miami Heat contract, career stats, relationships, championship rings and net worth.

Klay Thompson Age and Education

Klay Alexander Thompson was born on February 8, 1990, in Los Angeles, California. He is 36 years old as of 2026. He grew up in a family with a strong connection to professional sports. His father, Mychal Thompson, was a former NBA player who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft and won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. His mother, Julie Thompson, was a college volleyball player who competed for the University of Portland and the University of San Francisco.

Klay is the middle of three brothers. His older brother, Mychel Thompson, played professional basketball, including a brief stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, while his younger brother, Trayce Thompson, built a career in professional baseball and played for several MLB teams.

Thompson attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, where he became a standout basketball player. He then attended Washington State University from 2008 to 2011, earning two consecutive First-Team All-Pac-10 selections before entering the NBA Draft.

Klay Thompson NBA Career And Miami Heat

Klay Thompson has built his NBA career around one of the most valuable skills in basketball: elite three-point shooting. Thompson plays primarily as a shooting guard and became a key part of the Golden State Warriors alongside Stephen Curry, forming the famous “Splash Brothers” duo. Thompson is also known for his defence, smart movement without the ball, and ability to score in a hurry. In August 2026, Thompson joined the Miami Heat after reaching a buyout with Dallas. He signed a two-year deal worth approximately $11.5 million, with a player option for the second season, giving him an opportunity to chase another championship alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

During his final season with Dallas, Thompson appeared in 69 games and averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 38.3% from three. He made 202 three-pointers despite playing a career-low 21.7 minutes per game, showing that his outside shooting remained valuable even as his overall role declined.

Thompson entered the 2011 NBA Draft after three seasons at Washington State. The Golden State Warriors selected him with the 11th overall pick, beginning the NBA career that would eventually make him a four-time champion and five-time All-Star.

Thompson's résumé includes four NBA championships, five All-Star selections, two All-NBA honours, and an NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection. He also won the 2016 Three-Point Contest and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2012. On the global stage, Thompson won Olympic gold with Team USA in 2016 and a FIBA World Cup gold medal in 2014.

Some of Thompson's biggest NBA moments have come from his remarkable shooting. He holds the league record with 14 three-pointers in a single game and famously scored 37 points in the first quarter against the Sacramento Kings in 2015. Thompson enters the 2026–27 season fourth on the NBA’s all-time three-pointers list and just 74 behind Ray Allen for third place.

Thompson’s fit in Miami is largely about spacing. With Antetokounmpo and Adebayo creating pressure around the paint, his ability to stretch defenses from three gives the Heat another weapon on the perimeter. Miami is also hoping his championship experience can help a roster built to contend immediately. Miami opened its 2026–27 preseason with a 129–105 win over the Toronto Raptors on October 3, giving Thompson his first game action with a dramatically reshaped Heat roster. The regular season begins later in October, when Miami will begin testing whether its new veteran-heavy core can contend in the Eastern Conference.
