Ashby was acting from an early age and he used to attend parties and act on a movie set. On the set of Loving in 1983, he met his wife Susan Walters, a fellow actress. While filming the movie "Loving" they become good friends, and after a certain time, their friendship turned into love and soon changed into marriage. They got married on April 19, 1986.
