As a freshman at Ohio State Tate battled for the starting role in spring camp. Ultimately Tate served as the backup to football quarterback player Dwayne Haskins Jr.

Later on 15 January 2019, Tate transferred to the Miami Hurricanes football team representing the University of Miami. However, he would have to sit out for a year due to NCAA transfer rules and he was eligible to play for Miami from March 2019.

Later, it was again widely reported that Tate Martell would be transferring to UNLV and he did transfer to UNLV in July 2021.
