Bale was born in Wales in a family of mixed heritage and English descent. His mother, Jenny James, was a circus performer from England. His father David Charles Howard Bale was a talent manager, commercial pilot, and entrepreneur born in South Africa.

Christian spent his early years in the United States, Dorset, Surrey, Wales, and Portugal. When Bale was 2 years old, his family left Wales. After living in Oxfordshire and Portugal, they moved to Bournemouth. There Christian attended Bournemouth School for preliminary education. At the age of 16, he dropped out of school and decided to go into an acting career. When Christian was 17, his parents divorced, and Christian moved to Los Angeles with his father.

The filmography of Bale is genre-spanning. As a child, Bale trained in guitar and ballet and had an early interest in acting. At the age of 8 (1982), Christian appeared as a young prodigy in a TV commercial for the fabric softener Lenor. Two years later he joined a theater group and made his stage debut in the theater play "The Nerd". In 1986 Bale got his first role on the screen: the role of Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich in the TV film "Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna". However, his breakthrough performance was the starring role of Jim Graham in Steven Spielberg’s "Empire of the Sun" in 1987. He also got a Juvenile Actor Award from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures for this role. His next outstanding performances were roles in "Henry V" (1989),  "Newsies" (1992), "Swing Kids" (1993), "Little Women" (1994), "The Portrait of a Lady" (1996), and ‘Velvet Goldmine’ (1998).

 

Bale rose to fame after the role of psychopathic manager and serial killer  Patrick Bateman in the iconic "American Psycho" (2000). Directed by Mary Harron, this psychological horror film got a cult status. The 2002 year was the year of several notable roles for Bale including "Reign of Fire" and "Equilibrium". In 2006 Bale featured in "The Prestige" as Alfred Borden. His next outstanding performances were roles in "The Machinist" (2004), "Batman Begins" (2005), "The Dark Knight" (2008), "Fighter" (2010), "The Flowers of War" (2011), "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012), "American Hustle (2013), and "The Big Shor"t (2015).

 Bale also starred in" I'm Not There" (2007) "Terminator Salvation" (2009), "Out of the Furnace” (2013), as well as “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022). Bale also did different voice roles for several films including "Spirited Away".

The portrayal of Dicky Eklund in ‘The Fighter’ (2010) won Bale his first Golden Globe, Academy Award, and BAFTA Award. For his portrayal of Bruce Wayne in the ‘Batman’ franchise, Bale was awarded MTV Movie Awards, Empire Awards, Saturn Awards, Scream Awards, and People’s Choice Awards. Bale's roles in "American Hustle" (2013) and "The Big Short" (2015) won him three prestigious nominations including a Golden Globe.

Personal Life

For almost 20 years Christian Bale has been happily married to Sandra "Sibi" Blažić, a former make-up artist, personal assistant to Winona Ryder, and model of Serbian-American heritage. Bale married Sibi in 2000. The couple has been blessed with two children, a son Joseph, and a daughter Emmaline.

  1. Christian Bale is an active supporter of environmental initiatives and animal rights organizations WWF (World Wildlife Fund), Greenpeace, and the Doris Day Animal League.
